Soulmate/Stranger
The second iteration of Soulmates, Soulmate/Stranger expands into a trio and unravels the cyclical nature of love and harm—how the wounds we carry become the weight we pass on. Through shifting partnerships, tension-filled lifts, and unraveling gestures, the piece traces the quiet echoes of past mistreatment as they ripple through new connections. The movement oscillates between tenderness and resistance, questioning whether love is a place of refuge or repetition. Soulmate/Stranger asks: When does a lover become a stranger? And when does a stranger become the reflection of everything we’ve left behind? Conceived in August 2023, Soulmate/Stranger was performed in November 2024 the Joe Goode Annex as part of San Francisco’s Asian American Art (APATURE) Festival hosted by Kearny Street Workshop.
